"Explain" means because. "Evaluate" means judge.
The five verbs that decide most written marks, and what each one wants on the page.
Describe
Describe: what it’s likeGive the features and characteristics of each named thing, in exact terms. No “why” needed.Explain
Explain: cause → how → effectA complete chain for every part the question names: the cause, the law that links it, then the effect. A 4-mark explain is usually two parts × 2.Compare
Compare: both, side by sideLink the two things in each sentence, with similarities as well as differences. Two separate descriptions drop a level.Assess · Evaluate
Assess or evaluate: make the callWeigh it against criteria and evidence, then give a clear verdict for each aspect. No judgement, no top marks.Analyse
Analyse: how the parts affect each otherShow the relationships between the parts and what they imply. Description alone sits in the middle bands.
